In 2022:
- An old dream of the technical committee gained its wings: takeoff with an obstacle for the regular class! - more than 250 m (820 ft - almost 3 football fields) of tape was used throughout the competition!
- We took the first step towards a competition with 100% electric motorization in all classes
- The Safety Assessment discipline was officially integrated into the Electrical Design discipline
- For the first time, the micro class aircraft took off from a platform measuring just 4.2 m (13.8 ft)!!!
- We had, with the same rules, 4 flying wings, 6 biplanes, 52 monoplanes and 1 tandem
The total payload lifted during the competition, presented below in kilograms (1 kilogram is equivalent to 2.2 pounds - rougthly 1 2-slice toaster), is a function of the rules, the number of rounds in the competition, the performance of the teams, among other factors
In the regular class, even if glow engines resist, the transition to electric motorization advances
Since 2017 there isn't a score for structural efficiency anymore, however, the regular class teams continue to improve
The micro class has also been consistently advancing in its structural efficiency
The number of valid flights has been on a downward trend in recent years
Numbers don't lie...
The 2022 competition was challenging in many ways and represents a moment of resumption after two years of virtual projects. Even with rules that forced a lower MTOW and a smaller number of valid flights, the teams outdid themselves and carried more than half a metric ton during the entire flight competition and, in addition to that, we proved that the AeroDesign spirit is more alive than ever!
Let the preparations begin for the competition's 25th anniversary edition!
